CHAPTER 5
The desk sergeant welcomed them the following day and reported that the suspect had been restless all night, pacing his cell until the early hours of the morning.
âWeâll leave him half an hour or so. His solicitor is supposed to be coming in at nine-thirty. Weâll see if anyone shows up and go from there. I suppose that will be dependent upon whether theyâre available. If thatâs a negative, then weâll have to put in a request for the duty solicitor to attend.â
âLet me know if and when you need me to contact anyone,â Pat said.
âWe will. See you in a little while.â Sally tapped her code into the keypad, and the door sprang open, allowing her and Lorne to enter. âIâm going to leave the post until later. Weâll make a coffee and compare notes in my office, if youâre up for it?â
âSuits me, not that I have much to offer. By the time weâd finished dinner and cleared up after my late arrival home last night, it was already nine oâclock.â
âYeah, ditto. It was definitely an âall work and no playâ kind of day. As I see it, our main priority seems to be interviewing Pratt and then rooting around in his past to see what we can come up with about his associate.â
âYeah, somehow, I donât think having a poke around his social media accounts is going to cut it, do you?â
âSadly not.â
They reached the main office and greeted the rest of the team.
âI hope everyone is in good spirits and had a restful evening yesterday because weâre going to need to hit the ground running at full pelt this morning.â Sally noted that the others all had a cup of coffee on their desks, so she didnât bother asking if they wanted one. She poured herself and Lorne a drink and then loitered at the door before they retired to the office. âWeâre going to spend the next thirty minutes going over the notes we made last night. Iâd like everyone to carry on with the research they started yesterday into Prattâs background, with the intention of putting a name and face to his mysterious partner.â
The team put their heads down, and Lorne followed Sally into her office. They sat opposite each other and opened up their notebooks.
âIf Pratt doesnât speak to us after being banged up all night, Iâm not sure where we go from here,â Sally said.
âHey, donât sound so down about it, Sal, itâs still early days. Maybe we should call the lab, and see if they discovered any prints on the body, other than Prattâs, that we can run through the system.â
âThatâs a great idea. Iâll give them a call just before we go downstairs. Let me hear what you have.â
âNothing major, just the usual probing questions. It was still rankling me last night how shocked his wife was about his arrest.â
âMe, too.â Sally didnât get the chance to add anything else because her phone rang. âDI Sally Parker. How may I help?â
âItâs Pat on reception, maâam.
